Scottburgh

Scottburgh is situated on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast 58 K

Scottburgh is situated 58 kilometers South of the cosmopolitan city of Durban. The quaint village of Scottburgh is nestled alongside kilometers of shoreline washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Golden beaches, indigenous forests and rolling hills making Scottburgh one of the prime holiday destinations in South Africa.

 

Built on a headland overlooking a rugged section of the coastline, Scottburgh is well known for it’s excellent fishing and bathing. The main beach, Scott Bay, is protected by shark nets and the tidal pool and miniature railway are a delight for children. Besides the beach and angling, Scottburgh offers fine sporting facilities including golf courses, tennis courts and bowling greens. Croc World, just outside town, provides insight into the breeding and conservation of the crocodile.

Park Rhynie

A deaside resort offering protected bathing. The breakwater, built for the whaling station during the First World War, is today used by fishermen.

HISTORICAL VIEW

Light House

The Green Point lighthouse is a national monument, situated on a hill overlooking the dangerous Aliwal Shoal to protect shipping from running foul of the shoal. The Produce went down here in 1974. Local ski boat owners rescued a number of seamen.

NATURE

Empisini Nature Reserve

A Wildlife Society nature reserve, the 120 ha reserve has a number of trails through a variety of vegetation and is home to a number of birds and mammals. There is overnight accommodation, including a tree house.

South of Scottburgh along the N2 highway to Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve

TC Robertson Nature Reserve

Situated just outside Scottburgh. The river and coastal bush is home to a variety of water birds and other avifauna. TC Robertson has an impressive bird list of 206 species to date. Guided tours for groups – bookings essential. There is a braai area, toilet facilities and a marked self guide trail.

Umdoni Park

Offering outstanding forest birding. There is a trail through the coastal bush passing through areas covered by giant Umdoni and Natal Mahogany trees, abundant wildlife and interesting plant life. The estate is well known as a holiday hideaway for South African politiciants. Hence the presence of Botha House on the estate, named after an early South African Prime Minister – Louis Botha. A golf course established in the previously grassland areas, is also a major attraction.

Vernon Crookes

The KZNNCS reserve is stocked with a variety of game. The reserve is a birders paradise and binoculars are essential. The scenery is interesting. You will also find a well appointed picnic and braai area.

ATTRACTIONS

Croc World

A popular destination on the old main road north of Scottburgh where one can view the large Nile crocodile in safety. Feeding times are twice daily. There is a short coastal trail and the visitor can see a large number of indigenous birds including flamingoes and Fish Eagles.
